Directions to Visit the Virgelle Merc and the Virgelle Ferry:

From Great Falls: Take HWY 87 north and travel through the town of Loma. Go 12 miles past Loma, and after passing mile marker 66 take the next gravel road to your right (Gardiner Road). There are 2 signs at this intersection – the Merc sign says “MISSOURI RIVER CANOE CO. 8 MILES.” BLM has a sign there for directions to Coal Banks Landing as well. Follow this gravel road to the river bottom, when you pass through a concrete underpass, go right on Virgelle Ferry Road North 1/8th mile to Virgelle. (approx. 1.5 hours travel time)

NOTE: The sign to the Virgelle Ferry in Loma will take  you on 19 scenic miles of gravel road, including the historic Lewis & Clark “Decision Point”, to the Virgelle Ferry crossing just one mile before the Virgelle Mercantile. e advised that the ferry hours of operation are as follows, contingent upon river conditions: April to October, Monday – Saturday, 7am to 7pm, Sunday 9am to 5pm.

From Havre: Take HWY 2 west to the junction of HWY 87 south, going to Great Falls. After passing through Big Sandy, continue 7 miles and look for the highway sign to Virgelle. Turn left and travel 8 miles on a gravel road to Virgelle. (apprx. 1 hour travel time)
